Projecting Values
Recently, I have been coaching a senior manager in a large corporation. This guy is a peak performer, he reaches all his metrics, and he has got good morale, good cooperation, and a team that will work for him, with him, and will put their shoulder to mast when required because of who he is.
The challenge this manager has is every time he goes for a promotion, he falls at the post, and it seems to be that there is an unwritten rule that he must have this killer instinct. I said to him, ‘Have you ever considered the concept in NLP of called behavioural flexibility?’
He said. ‘If I am flexible, I will have to change my values, and I’m not going to that level’. This claim that he didn’t have what it takes, that killer instinct to be able to make those difficult decisions, even though he filled the criteria, he had the values, competency, and the abilities yet it would only take him so far. Here is the question, if you are put in that context, are you flexible enough around your values to be able to change without upsetting all your other values? Can you develop a capacity and an ability to become flexible and not to lose yourself in the process?
